A: Main Points
- Packaged products incur a hefty toll on the environment as product packaging is usually discarded quickly, ending up in landfills.
- The emphasis on sustainable development and living elicits improvements in every aspect of product development, including pack agin.
- It should be understood that eco-designs of the product and its packaging are specifically intended not only to enhance environmental conservation, but also to savelong-term production costs.
- Excessive packaging necessitates more materials, more resources to manufacture, so entailing more costs.
- Reducing the amount of packaging, which reduces CO2 emission as less power and fuel are used for production and transportation.
- Japan, stiff penalties, surcharges and taxes coerce producers and consumers to pay careful attention to the amount of packaging produced and disposed.
- Laws therefore are critical in setting up the right framework in which green consumerism can take place, however particular laws are not effective if they stand alone.
- Consumer awareness on environmental conservation is increasing, product packaging is no exception.
- Packaging layers are typically distinguished into primary, secondary and tertiary, where the primary layer directly houses and protects the product, secondary and tertiary layers are the intermediate and exterior layers such as paper and cardboard/plastic sleeves and boxes.
- Cost savings are passed along the supply chain to the downstream and provide savings for consumers, who are inevitably concerned with price.
- The nature of some products demand substantial packaging.
- Efforts should be made to ensure the packaging is user friendly so it doesn't need to be destroyed while accessing the product.
- A longer life for packaging is based by the shape and size. Odd shapes and large sizes are not storage friendly.
- Packaging can be designed so that it encourages consumers to permanently keep the package
- Greater consumer awareness and more regulatory requirements on brand owners and producers would push demand for green packaging training and expertise.
- Brand owners need to be aware of environmental laws and consumer perception
- Neglecting could cost the brand owners dearly
B: Author's Point:
The author main point's to this article is about how manufacturers and many businesses are using too much packaging in their products. Over-packaging causes a big toll on the environment, environmental and financial costs. There are three layers to packaging: primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary is the only packaging that is needed. Secondary and tertiary is not needed and is thrown out most of the time. To prevent over-packaging, there must be laws that govern packaging. Particular laws are not effective if they stand alone. Consumers could push the manufacturers for green packaging. They can also make their packaging user friendly. Simple packaging could minimize production time costs. Manufacturers and brand owners need to be aware of the environmental laws and consumer perception. If they neglect the laws and perceptions, they can lose a lot of money.

C: My thoughts
My thoughts after reading this article is that it's really educational for a lot of people that uses a lot of material such as plastic to their business. And this can also help other to think about how much the plastic they are wasting and an amount of being thrown away because it's no good to use it anymore and it's not really recyclable. If this will change the cause of plastic being and when this will stop then many chances that we will decrease our plastic waste. And it's actually helpful because a lot of marketing and manufacturing will just recycle cause they only dealing with papers now.

So What?
Over packaging can lead to a lot of stuff such as, the environment and the financial costs that many people pay for. The manufacturers should start taking risk of this packaging and should reduce it before it's too late.
What if?
Over packaging is recyclable?
Says Who?
Steve Lau
What does this remind you of?
This remind me of that one video that I watched how plastic took over the landfills.
