Questions:
What evidence would convince you that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is not extinct?
-Clear video to see it.
-A good picture.
-Feathers- DNA.
-Bird Calls.
Evaluate the merit of the video as scientific evidence?
-In my opinion it wasn't a good video because the video was short and not enough evidence that they really saw and the graphic was too blurry to identify if its a Ivory-billed woodpecker.
Questions:
What is the major conflict between Brad and Mary in terms of the scientific process? Make a list of Brad's arguments and valid pieces of evidence and Mary's response to each.
Brad"s Argument:
- He found a lot of sound evidence that is similar to the Ivory-billed woodpecker.
-He wants to search the whole entire forest.
-Quick finding.
-More sounds evidence for the Ivory-billed woodpecker.
-Want's to publish an article that the Ivory-billed woodpecker still alive.
-Has a blurry capture.
Mary's Response:
-It's not enough to support that the Ivory-billed still alive.
-Want's to stay in a spot where they capture the video.
-Takes time to find the woodpecker.
-Wasn't agreeing to Brad's of his sound evidence.
-Don't want Brad to publish an article because it's not enough evidence that he really heard the Ivory-billed woodpecker.
What do you think about Brad's concern that by waiting which the announcement they could miss their chance to save the birds.
-It's because they are about 2-3 Ivory left in the world and don't want to miss it before they are gone.
Imagine you are the owner of a company that owns the logging rights adjacent to the area of the woodpecker sighting, or a biologist trying to protect the habitat of another endangered species in another part of the state. Do you think that they would be satisfied with the same amount of evidence in this case as Brad? Why/Why not?
-I think that being in Brad's situation it would come from his undiscovered of the Ivory-billed woodpecker but a fame of his small evidence of the woodpecker.
What is the right amount of evidence? How can you determine the answer to that question?
-I think the right evidence would be a clear video and picture also to support that you find the bird give it a DNA test.
Give other examples of public discourse, policy decisions, or controversial issues where your insights from this case could be applied.
Finding the Big Foot, and the discover of Mermaids.
Decide how much evidence you would need to accept the claim that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is not extinct.
I need a clear video and a picture to accept the claim that the Ivory-billed Woodpecker is not extinct.
Put yourself in Brad's position what would you have told the reporter?
If I was in Brad's position I would tell the reporter that the information of the woodpecker is on hold since I don't have any good evidence to support that the bird still alive and not to tell in public.
Does it matter to you who present the evidence?
Yes it matters because if I let myself to present that the woodpecker doesn't extinct then people would look at me crazy and I would let a scientist or a professional bird discovery to do it.
Who presented the evidence in the real Ivory-billed Woodpecker case?
Brad Murkey
