A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points-point by point:
- Salmon catching bears fertilize forests with the partially eaten carcasses of their favorite food.
-Salmon emerge from the gravel in in streams or lakes in spring.
-Over various periods of time, migrate to the ocean.
-Living at the sea between 1-4 years, they return to their natal streams to spawn and die.
-Salmon are crucial resources for the bears because the survival and reproductive success of these large mammals depend on the amount of fat they can deposit in the late summer and fall.
-about 20,000 carcasses revealed that bears consume about 25% of each captured salmon, selectively eating only the parts highest in fat content.
-Killing many of the fatter salmon, carrying the nutrient-loaded fish to the forest, and abandoning the carcass with most of the biomass.
-Bears make a tremendous amount of food and nutrients available to stream side plants and animals that would not otherwise have access to this resources.
-Bears can be a big impact on the environment.
-Areas of the forest need more nutrients than other parts because bears are missing and didn't want to live there.
B:Summarize the AUTHOR's main point or idea - at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs:
Bears can really be a big role in the ecosystem of the forest and the environment. They help the forest to fertilize by partially eat the carcasses as their favorite food. And the bears favorite food is the Salmon they mostly eat this fish because it gives them a lot of nutrients to their body and not only that it also can give nutrients to the forest by the parts of the fish they don't really eat called carcasses. If the forest didn't get that much of nutrients by the bears carcasses then they migrate to places which really impact to the forest most. The author is telling us that we need to take action because forest are dying causes of less nutrients. Bears are also need to be take care because if we lose them no one can give nutrients to the forest anymore.
C:Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic:
I thought that bears aren't the one that can give nutrients to the forest. I thought that every animal can because they live parts of the animals they eat. But since the bear eats fish such as salmon that has a lot of nutrients because of their carcasses. It's really not a default idea to leave the carcasses from the forest to let the land do the part of the ecosystem to get nutrients that they don't really get from it.
Say What?
That the forest are losing nutrients and the bears are becoming extinct. All of us needs to awareness and action because if the bears becoming extinct then we are losing resources and losing resources can impact all of us. And the forest needs to be taken care because a lot of animals will lose their habitat and food.
Says Who?
Scott M. Gende and Thomas P. Quinn who performed the experiment and who the article.
What if?
if the bears are becoming to extinct we need to play our role as the protector what's left. Not only that we need to also protect their habitat because with out their habitat they wouldn't become extinct in the first place. Were going to protect them by putting nutrients to the forest and stop the loggers to cut down trees and we can find a way to get nutrients to them.
What does this remind me of?
This reminds me of the labs that we have done to the class such as, the coyote lab, and the phytoplankton this two labs plays the major roles to our environment with out then no one can be helping the environment will gets its nutrients.
